Here’s a short mix in anticipation of our 17th December Christmas Party. As usual before a Secret Danger I have a long list of things I want to play on the night. This time as I’m DJing with Sion I won’t necessarily get to play exactly what I want so I decided to throw a short mix together. It’s a pretty loose mixtapey kind of thing. I wanted to shy away from the 40 minute ambient build-ups of previous mixes and concentrate on tracks with people you’ve never met commanding you to party.

I don’t want to tell you how to live your lives or anything but it’s probably a good thing to listen to while putting on your leathers or commuting to work.

The idea was to make a mix that you might listen to if you weren’t coming out to Secret Danger. So more than home-listening it’s home-on-saturday-night-alone-listening. I also wanted to experiment with mixing in key. This isn’t really something I do when I play out – If you’ve seen me DJ you’ll know that I barely believe in beatmatching before mixing a record in–but I wanted to try it here.  Rather than thinking about the effect it would have on two tracks played together I wanted to know what it would do to two tracks played in sequence. Anyway, it’s got some bits taken from films, some tracks by the biggest bands of the 60s and, in the Gruen piece, one of my all-time favourite film scores.

Factory Floor – Two Different Ways

We were big fans of (R E A L L O V E), the last Factory Floor single on Optimo Music. Over the last few months the original mix has probably been my number 1 choice for clearing the M bar dancefloor. When they played the Dollop warehouse party a few months ago they stuck to those high tresor bpms for most of the evening, pounding out one of the most techno sets that I’ve heard all year. For their new single on DFA they’ve slowed things down to a less brutal 130bpm. The big softies. Some cowbell also seems to have rubbed off in the DFA pressing plant.

Maria Minerva – Luv So Strong

MM is another of our favourite artists of the last 12 or so months and another example of someone making intriguing dance-not-dance music. Noble Savage always seemed to go down pretty well, so we have nothing but high hopes for this one with its cunning use of drums that you can actually hear.

Ollie: This just had to be my first contribution to our first show. I brought it along because I thought me and Ali were going to hotbox the studio and broadcast this one track interspersed with harmonica jams, like the show Dean Blunt did in Amsterdam recently. Alas it didn’t turn out like that but you’re not allowed to be on the radio in 2011 without playing Dean ‘n’ Inga anyway, so there you have it.

Ollie: This was released on Clone, which is a totally amazing Dutch label. That’s a tenuous link if ever I saw one. But that’s what we do on this show, we connect the dots!

Ollie: I had heard Dan & Nadia play this on their show a couple of weeks before and thought I’d copy them. It’s probably one of the greatest house tracks ever made so I don’t think it matters. Optimo played for 8 hours in Peckham last week and if I had to collate all of the songs they played into some sort of ‘goodness’ pie chart this would represent 76%.

I shall try and remember to play the above tracks on Saturday at Secret Danger. All except the Was Not Was track as it’s not very good.

It really is fantastic though. And it’s a testament to it’s addictiveness that I’m still going to play it out in the coming weeks despite almost rinsing it completely through first youtube clips, then the promo. Grab it at Rub A Dub now (feels kinda nice to order it from there, Jackmaster having worked there and all, more pennies in their pocket now they’ve lost an employee to world-wide-touring-DJ fame).
